Long before tourists showed up, the Yakama, Chinook, and Wenatchi tribes used the area surrounding Leavenworth for salmon fishing and trade. Then the pioneers arrived, and by the late 1800s, it was a busy place for timber and the railroad. But once those industries moved away, the town almost disappeared entirely. The Bavarian look we all know now was not some natural progression.
It was a plan started in the 1960s to keep the place from becoming a ghost town. They called it Project LIFE, which stood for Leavenworth Improvement For Everyone. The idea was to remodel the town center to look like a village in the Alps. The Chikamin Hotel was one of the first to get the stucco and woodwork treatment, and that really set the tone for everyone else. By 1964, they started the Autumn Leaf Festival to give people a reason to visit.
In the 1970s, the town leaned even harder into this identity. They started Art in the Park, and local artists became a big part of the downtown scene. They also got strict with building codes to make sure every new shop or house matched the theme. This is also when Arlene Wagner began her nutcracker collection. It is one of those things that sounds niche until you see thousands of them in one place.
By the 1980s, the focus shifted toward the outdoors. People had been skiing there since the 20s, but the Leavenworth Ski Hill really became a family staple during this decade. At the same time, more people started heading into the Enchantments. Leavenworth became the spot where hikers would grab a meal before or after hitting the trails. They also expanded events like Maifest so people would come by in the spring, not just the summer.
The 1990s saw a return to some older roots, specifically beer. The area had a history with hops from the early settler days, and craft breweries brought that back. They also put effort into Enchantment Park to keep the waterfront nice while the downtown got busier. Then they added the Christkindlmarkt, which essentially turned the town into a Christmas destination.
Nowadays, Leavenworth is mostly an adventure and tourism hub. You see people here for the whitewater rafting or the rock climbing. It has gotten so popular that there is a real conversation happening about how to manage the crowds and protect the national forest. Plus, the wine scene in the Wenatchee Valley has really taken off, so now you have tasting rooms popping up all over the edges of town.
Leavenworth Alpine Tours is licensed by the USFS for wilderness trail usage permitted by and conducted in the Okanogan - Wenatchee National Forest.
